Girls with Hi-Vis – Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in Infrastructure

16 June

TW Group Hosts Girls with Hi-Vis event to Inspire Future Women in Infrastructure.

TW Group opened its headquarters earlier in the month to a group of wāhine from Tamatea and Havelock North High Schools as part of the nationwide Girls with Hi-Vis initiative, led by Connexis.

The event aimed to showcase the exciting and diverse career opportunities available to young women in New Zealand’s infrastructure sector. The students participated in a series of hands-on workstations, gaining real-world experience in areas such as heavy machinery operation, surveying, and temporary traffic management. They also had the opportunity to hear from three inspiring women within TW Group’s Civil and Infrastructure team, who shared their personal journeys into the industry.

Adding to the day’s inspiration, Napier Mayor Kirsten Wise and Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst visited the event to speak with the students about their futures and the importance of women’s leadership in traditionally male-dominated fields.

“This purpose-driven event is about more than just showcasing skills—it’s about opening doors,” said a TW Group spokesperson. “We want these young women to see that a career in infrastructure is not only possible, but full of opportunity, growth, and impact.”

Connexis Executive Director Kaarin Gaukrodger emphasized the importance of initiatives like GWHV in addressing the country’s infrastructure skills shortage. “Women bring valuable perspectives and strengths to the workforce—from improving safety and communication to innovating how physically demanding tasks are approached,” she said.

TW Group extends its thanks to Connexis for facilitating the event and to all the students who participated. “We hope to see some of these young wāhine back at TW Group in the future.”
